Welcome to Year 5
We are looking forward to the new term ahead. We have lots of exciting topics to learn about.
In our maths lessons we are continuing to learn how to answer reasoning questions, alongside the skills that we cover in our curriculum. It is important that children continue to practise the skills that they learn in school, in order to do this they can access MyMaths (at www.mymaths.co.uk/primary.html) or MathsWatch (at http://www.mathswatchvle.com/mathswatchprimary). Your child will have their own password and Login details, which you can find at the front of their maths homework book. Every week the children will be set a piece of written maths homework, and in addition, there will be work for them to complete on MyMaths.
In English we will be examining fiction and non-fiction, based on the topic of space. We will continue to work on improving the style of our writing. Children will be using all of the skills that they have been learning to create pieces of writing. They are now able to edit their own work, and then improve upon what they have written. They should continue to learn the Year 5 spelling list. The children will receive one piece of written homework per week, and in addition they are expected to regularly read and learn their spellings.
In science we will be learning all about space, so you might like to learn a little about this topic with your child before we begin. We have arranged for the children to go on a trip to Jodrell Bank in Cheshire, on Monday 22nd May. The children will have the opportunity to view space through one of the countries largest telescopes (more details will be sent to you nearer the time).
We would like to remind pupils that they should ensure they come to school each day with everything that they need (including packed lunches and P.E. kits). This is our last term in Year 5, and we would like to make it as informative and interesting as possible.
If you have any concerns, or would just like a chat, please come and talk to one of the Year 5 staff.
Thank you for your continued support.
